Who will benefit from the projects of ZCDC? ZCDC will target north central Austin or zip code 78753. The 78753 zip code/Rundberg area has the fastest rising crime rate in the city. The Austin Police Department states that right now the Rundberg area is a source of violent crime, prostitution, and the drug trade. North central Austin is an underserved community, in terms of social service agencies and neighborhood involvement. In 2000 the drop-out rate for students in middle and high schools just north of Hwy 290 (including Dobie Middle School and Lanier High School) were 6.3% to 17.7%. Approximately 77% of the students at Dobie Middle School are economically disadvantaged. Our targeted population for the TPK job training program is formerly homeless and low-income adults that have at least one barrier to employment, specifically those without education or those with criminal histories. Trainees must be at or below 150% of the federal poverty level and most be able to work a 40 hour week. The TPK storefront will be in a targeted economically disadvantaged neighborhood in north central Austin. As we begin our training program we expect to train two individuals every six months (four per year). As we grow, we hope to train three individuals per every six months. |
